Belarc announces Licensing Agreement with Lotus Development

Lotus will use BelUpdate to offer its SmartSuite users Web-based SuiteUpdate capability

Maynard, MA, June 23, 1999 -- Belarc, Inc., a leader in licensing Web-platforms used to offer Web-based updates, notifications and tech support, announced today that Lotus Development Corporation has licensed its BelUpdate product for use in Lotus' SuiteUpdate facility. SuiteUpdate enables Web site visitors and corporate Intranet users to automatically select and install the right SmartSuite updates on a Web page, based on their licensed installation of software and hardware.

BelUpdate provides the Web-platform that automatically manages the version checking, downloading and installation of just the right updates and upgrades, making it ideal for everyday computer users rather than experts. SmartSuite is Lotus' suite of desktop applications that includes the popular Lotus 1-2-3 spreadsheet, Organizer time and contact manager, Word Pro word processor, plus 5 additional web-enabled applications.

"SuiteUpdate enables our customers to incrementally update their software, without having to do a complete re-install" said Robert Norton, director of SmartSuite product management. "Using BelUpdate, we are able to satisfy our customers' requirements to simplify deployment and maintenance of SmartSuite across enterprise environments easily and securely."

"We are very pleased to have Lotus Development as our latest licensee of our Web-platform products., said Sumin Tchen and Gary Newman founders of Belarc. "It is clear that the Web will make delivering updates, personalized messages, tech tips, and tech support easier, more reliable and more cost effective for software developers, computer manufacturers and many others."

Privacy Issues

Privacy of the end-user's profile is critical for a successful Web product. All Belarc products keep the end-user's profile private on their computer. The profile is not sent to any server, and the personalization is done entirely on the user's computer.

Other Belarc Web-platform products include:

  • BelNotify, which proactively tells the end-user about specials, tech tips, updates, and upgrades, and more, all based on their installed software, hardware and specified preferences.
  • BelTech enables Web-based self-help and problem resolution for all end-users, even those who are not technical or computer literate. BelTech allows the end-user to simply click on a web page link to automatically resolve their problem or point them to the right solution.

Belarc, Inc., located in Maynard, MA, licenses products to computer manufacturers, software publishers and others which offer a Web-platform to deliver updates, proactive notifications, technical support and problem resolution.
